The Decade

When you came, you were like red wine and honey,

And the taste of you burnt my mouth with its sweetness.

Now you are like morning bread,

Smooth and pleasant.

I hardly taste you at all for I know your savour,

But I am completely nourished.

Amy Lowell

Amy Lowell (1874–1925) was born into a wealthy New England family. She began writing poetry in 1902; her first book of poems, A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass, appeared in 1912. A key moment in her poetic career came in 1913, when she became aware of Ezra Pound's Imagist movement. On visits to England in 1913 and 1914 she met Pound and other Imagists, including H.D. In 1914 she began her lifelong relationship with the actress Ada Russell, for whom she wrote ‘Madonna of the Evening Flowers’ and others of her love poems. An immensely prolific poet, she produced numerous collections, including two that were published posthumously.
